The development of the spiritual side of life for residents of Riverview Estates is under the direction of our full time chaplain. The chaplain heads the department of pastoral care. In cooperation with the Resident Life department the chaplain convenes the pastoral care team-a group of residents who meet quarterly to discuss the quality of pastoral care here at the Baptist Home.

While the Home is no longer exclusively for Baptists, our connection with American Baptist Churches of New Jersey and the American Baptist Churches/USA remains strong. The census at Riverview Estates is approximately 32% Baptist, 30% Catholic, 12% Methodist, 6% Lutheran, 6% Presbyterian, 4% Episcopalian, 3% with no religious affiliation, 3% unaffiliated Christian, 2% Protestant, 1% Pentecostal, and 1% Seventh Day Adventist. Sunday services begin at 11:00 a.m. with a group communion service for our Roman Catholic residents. The group meets in the chapel and the service is conducted by the eucharistic ministers from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church of Riverton. The afternoon protestant service is conducted in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. and is generally led by one of the pastors from our supporting American Baptist Churches. Monday through Friday

chapel is held each morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. and lasting approximately 30 minutes. Our chaplain schedules the speakers, which may include not only the chaplain, but clergy or lay speakers from area churches. The chaplain seeks to schedule the clergy of our residents on a regular basis.

On Saturday a prayer group meets at the 9:00 a.m. hour for singing and sharing prayer concerns. A specific focus is prayer for the Home-its administration and staff.

Each week there is a chapel service led by the chaplain in the Nursing Unit. There is also a weekly Bible study for residents and also a weekly Bible study for staff to attend. The chaplain also provides a Reading Circle where Christian literature is shared with those who may be visually impaired or who just enjoy hearing a good book read.

The Resident Life department will also schedule an occasional Bible trivia game with another facility or group. Sometimes that is simple Bible trivia, but on other occasions we play "Bible baseball," which the residents thoroughly enjoy.

Off site retreats are scheduled twice per year-spring and fall. Residents enjoy the out of doors, each others company and grow in their spiritual life during these events.

The chaplain is available for individual counseling as the need arises. The chaplain also makes visits when residents are hospitalized or require rehab outside the facility.
